Saint Bernard

Alpine Mastiff, Bernhardiner, St Bernhardshund, St Bernard, Saint

The Saint Bernard is an outgoing, friendly dog, who is amazing with children, showing outstanding patience and tolerance. They are a big dog, and although quiet in behavior, they are not suited to small apartment living because of their size. Because the breed was developed to withstand the extremely cold conditions of the Alps, they have a low tolerance to heat. These dogs love being with their family and do better when they are in the house with their people. The Saint Bernard has a sound temperament, and although they take longer to mature mentally and remain puppyish for longer, they do make wonderful pets. If you are a neat person, they may drive you crazy with their shedding twice a year, they do drool, and their paws can track in a considerable amount of dirt. They do need space to stretch out and move around in but are not overly active. The breed is easy to train although they can get stubborn at times. A well-rounded dog is one that has had early exposure to many people and experiences.

Saint Bernard Breed History

It is thought that the breed was created when dogs native to the Alps were crossed with Mastiff type dogs that the Roman army brought with them during the reign of emperor Augustus. The Saint Bernard Pass is a well-known treacherous alpine path, and the remnants of the Great Roman Road can still be seen, a true piece of history that is evidence of Napoleon’s crossing. The name Saint Bernard came from their founder St. Bernard de Menthon and the monks who established the breed. The Switzerland Hospice St. Bernard used these great dogs to assist travellers who were going through the dangerous Alpine pass that lay between Switzerland and Italy. The first Saint Bernard’s were of the short haired variety, as they found the longer haired dogs tended to collect icicles. In the mid seventeenth century, they became the go to dog for rescue work, with their ability to smell a person buried under many feet of snow after an avalanche. These amazing dogs worked in teams, and when one found a victim, they would lie down with them to keep them warm while another dog alerted the rescue team. They can also predict storms and avalanches which have been attributed to their ability to hear very low frequency sounds. A hospice dog named Barry became famous in 1800 to 1810 for finding more than 40 rescues; he became the most famous dog ever and often the Saint Bernard was referred to as Barryhunden in his honour. The Swiss Kennel Club officially recognized the breed in 1889, and in 1887 the International Congress of Zurich produced the first breed standard, and all countries except England accepted it.

Saint Bernard Breed Appearance

The Saint Bernard is a giant of a dog, strong and muscular, with a massive, powerful head. The muzzle on this breed is short and is wider than it is in length. The teeth meet in a level or scissors bite. The lips and nose are black, with the nose being broad and with wide open nostrils. The Saint Bernard has medium sized eyes that are dark in color and give the dog a slightly sad look to his expression. These dogs can gain weight easily but if it stays in proportion to their height, the more impressive it looks. The legs are muscular with large feet and well arched toes. The powerful tail is broad and held low when the dog is relaxed. The faces and ears are often black, while the ears are set high on the head, dropping and sitting out away from the head a bit. This beautiful breed has two types of coats – they can be either rough or smooth but both are dense to protect them from the cold weather, and their coloring can be a mix of white with markings in tan, red, black, brindle and in all possible combinations. In the rough coated dogs, their hair is a bit longer than the smooth coat, and they have feathering on the legs and thighs.

Saint Bernard Breed Maintenance

Both the smooth and rough coated Saint Bernard are easy types of coats to groom. They do need a comb and brush with a firm bristle brush to cope with the shedding. Bathing is on a needs-only basis, if they have rolled in mud or something that smells not so good. Shampoo may strip the coat of its naturally oily water-resistant properties. It is advisable to use a mild soap that is designed just for dogs. The eyes of this big dog are inclined to water, so around the eyes need special attention to keep them clean and free from irritation. Because of their size, they do need a good daily walk to keep them trim and fit. They can be prone to bloat, so rather than one large meal a day, it is better to have two to three small meals. Other maintenance requirements is a regular check of the ears to ensure they are clean as their floppy ears can get infected if they are not cleaned. Apart from that, brushing time is a great opportunity to check your dog for any cuts, abrasions, or parasites like ticks or fleas. They are easy to groom.

Saint Bernard Temperament

The Saint Bernard is known as gentle giants; they are extremely gentle, friendly and very tolerant of the antics of young children. This breed is slow moving, patient and obedient. They are very loyal, eager and they love to please their human family. While they are very intelligent animals, training should begin while young, when they are still small enough to manage. They need to be taught not to jump up on people in case they flatten or injure younger family members. The sooner you can teach them to walk on a leash under your control, the easy it will be to walk them. If you don’t teach them to heel, you may find yourself dragged along the pavement to where the dog wants to go. They are a good guard dog as even their size deters the average stranger. The Saint Bernard likes to know what is expected of them; they need to know that you are the pack leader not them, and they need the training to get the best from the breed. Although they are not an aggressive dog, their sheer size can be dangerous if not curtailed and controlled. Their impressive sense of smell combined with their sixth sense about approaching bad weather makes them a highly prized and respected dog.

Our girl is large (155lbs.) She is a mix with a bit of German Shepherd. She has a happy and sweet personality with all people. She is 6 yrs old and still very much loves to play. On walks she loves to 'Get her SNIFF on', meaning she stops to smell everything!! She is very intelligent and also protective of our home from other animals as we live in the country. She is an outside dog but I know she would be happier if allowed to come inside the house as she really loves to spend as much time with us as possible. We love her too just dont want to have dog hair on everything inside our home. She loves to eat and we feed her 3 small meals a day. I say small but it is in relation to her giant size. I laugh to myself when I look at the size of feeding dishes at stores always so small. And we had a dog house custom built for her because of her size.

Our baby Penny is the sweetest dog in the world. She absolutely loves and adores everyone she comes into contact with and is very friendly. She is great with our two young children and is generally low energy. We walk her for about ten minutes once a day and she is pooped lol! She does shed ALOT so constant sweeping and vacuuming are needed. She does drool occasionally also. But, she is such a love muffin and sweetheart. Her favorite thing is snuggling with her people. Training her was easy in some ways. She still pulls on her leash though.

Saint Bernards are very stubborn and since they're such a large breed it's very hard to get them to do what you want. They should be trained as a young puppy with lots of rules to follow cause once they're over 100lbs you cant stop them anymore. They are super friendyly they are the "Nana" dog after all but they are huge so you have to watch out for them knocking people down. If you have a rough coat they need frequent grooming to help with matts and deshedding. And of course watch out for the drool, who knows maybe you'll get lucky and get a dry mouth but it's never a guarantee!!

This big puppy is just that. A big puppy. I had no trouble getting her to listen or do what I want. I believe that if you start at a young age with any pup that you can train them well. We had a little issue getting the harness on as she was so excited to get out of her kennel. After we got that on we went out for our walk. I was fore warned that she is difficult. I did not find her to be difficult at all. She listened to my commands and did as I asked. She sat at the corners when I asked her to before we crossed the streets. When we passed areas with other dogs I firmly told her to FOCUS and she did pretty well. After I took her back home she willingly went back into her kennel. She is a big breed who needs attention.

Saint Bernards are some of the best big dogs around! They're extremely friendly, docile and affectionate. They tend to just go with the flow of whatever the walker and anyone around them is doing or into. When I've taken them to dog parks they really enjoy the chance to run free, and they're excellent about keeping on friendly terms with the other dogs in spite of pretty much always being the biggest dog around. They love meeting new people, especially if they think those people have treats, and are great with all ages. I've even been in situations where smaller dogs have attacked or otherwise provoked Saint Bernards and the Saint Bernard just sat there and wondered why the other dog was all riled up.

Our Harper girl loves her dog brother and sister, and she is best friends with our 14 tabby cat. Our other cat and her don’t get along well though. As for people, she loves everyone in the house and loves to sit on our laps for nap time. She is a big baby but is terrified and very hesitant with strangers, but we think that’s our fault for not socializing her enough as a puppy. Great girl, does get separation anxiety and chews when we leave. Drooling only occurs after eating and drinking or while begging. She can be a bit lazy but she also gets hyper sometimes. Love her, love the breed.
