The German Shepherd originated from Germany in 1899 as a herding dog. This loyal and determined canine would work on farms tending to the livestock and assisting with herding sheep. Since then, they have branched out to become the leading police and military working breed. With a noble look, they stand strong and mighty and have a dark, gazing stare.

The German Shepherd is considered a large breed with a medium-length double coat that is traditionally brown and black. Their ears are erect and sit high on the head. Known to be fearless, they are motivated to complete their mission of serving others. They remain a favorite breed among people in the United States.

This attractive canine is loved due to their intelligence and obedient nature. They are always eager to serve you as a companion or to assist you with jobs, such as working as a guide or as a search-and-rescue breed. This canine requires some grooming maintenance due to their shedding coat and should be brushed weekly to eliminate dead hair. This clever dog is happy as long as they are provided with enough activity to motivate them.

German Shepherd Breed History

The German Shepherd originated from Germany, which is where the breed obtained its name. The establishment of this dog can be attributed to Captain Max von Stephanitz who helped develop the breed into a versatile working dog. This canine evolved due to a desire to create a breed that could lead a large flock of sheep and patrol them.

While early documentation surrounding the canine is limited, it is believed that von Stephanitz bred local shepherds of different hair varieties in order to create the breed. The German Shepherd's original purpose was to herd sheep in farms but was later modified to work for the military by the German army. During World War I, these hardworking dogs supplied German soldiers with food deliveries as well as other supplies.

In 1800, the Verein fur Deutsche Scharferhunde SV was initiated to monitor the development of the breed and to create a herding dog capable of remaining athletic in the field. The first German Shepherd, Horan, was registered in 1899. The breed went through a series of name changes, in part due to the unpopularity of being associated with Germany at the time. Initially named as a Sheepdog, their title was changed to Shepherd Dog by the American Kennel Club. At the same time, England changed their name to the Alsatian Wolf Dog, which instilled fear in people.

In 1908, the breed was officially recognized by the American Kennel Club. In 1913, the German Shepherd Club of America was formed. In 1931, the American Kennel Club changed the name back to German Shepherd. This regal dog gained popularity after the war and has been featured throughout the decades in pop culture. Rin Tin Tin was credited with keeping Warner Bros afloat. In the Batman comic world, Ace the Bat-Hound showed up in 1955. The breed has also appeared in All Dogs Go to Heaven, 101 Dalmatians II, and I am Legend. 

German Shepherd Breed Appearance

The German Shepherd's appearance is that of a strong, versatile breed. Their majestic stance is full of poise and agility.

Their body is muscular and well-proportioned. Their body is longer than tall, emphasizing the strong build.

Their front legs are straight, while their compact feet contain arched toes and firm pads. The nails are black and short.

With a head in proportion to the body, they have average-sized, almond-shaped brown eyes. Their steady expression is that of intelligence. The ears are pointy and erect when the dog is alert. The muzzle is strong with a black nose, and the neck leads to a powerful back.

The dog sports a bushy tail with a slight curvature. When they are excited, their tail curves more distinctively. A proud gait allows them to cover much ground with their strides.

The coat consists of a medium-length, double coat with a thick undercoat. The fur comes in 11 different color combinations.

German Shepherd Breed Maintenance

This active canine has a medium-length, double coat with a dense undercoat that contains straight hair. Daily brushing of the coat is needed to remove dead hair and to avoid more than usual shedding.

Bathing a German Shepherd is recommended every 6-8 weeks to maintain cleanliness and keep the shedding at a minimal level. Special shampoo can be used in conjunction with a de-shedding tool and firm bristle brush. They are a heavy shedder and are not recommended for people with allergies.

Their upright ears should be wiped and cleaned weekly and the nails trimmed every 3 to 4 weeks to avoid overgrowth.

The breed should be provided with much mental and physical stimulation daily and requires daily walks and engaging play sessions to keep them motivated. It is recommended that they be provided with running and retrieving activities as exercise.

While apartment dwelling is discouraged, if there are sufficient exercise and space provided, the breed can still fare well in this environment. They are able to reside in many different climates.

They are a smart breed who loves to learn new tasks. They thrive on being able to take on engaging tasks to work on mental stimulation and enjoy learning tricks and helping the family. Easy to train and always ready for adventure, this inquisitive companion has a lot of energy and likes to remain active. It is highly recommended to provide them with the needed stimulation on a daily basis. Doing so will keep both you and your pet happy.

He learns so quickly! And if you know how to properly assert yourself as leader biting isn’t a problem even for my young pup. He was starting to go potty outside by five weeks old and knew how to sit and shake after just one day of practicing. I’ve never had a smarter or more loyal dog.

She is extremely well behaved, and everyone always notices and tells me how behaved she is at events with other dogs jumping on each other. She usually just follows me around and watches me do everything. She does usually give 1 warning bark for every dog entering our area.

German Shepherd are extremely intelligent and kind dogs. They have a lot of energy and are very active. They can easily be trained and often times are trained to preform jobs such as police dogs or service dogs. German Shepherds also make great family pets as they are kind and gentle to humans.

I’ve had very different German Shepard experiences. One pair was hopeless to train, pulled a lot and had too much energy. Likely they weren’t exercised enough. The other who was walked more often was very calmed and liked people more and enjoyed walking and sniffing.

My experience with them they did not pull hard on the leash, but they did like to stay consistent with the walking. They were not aggressive at all with other dogs or humans.

German Shepherds can be touchy. They’re so protective of their homes I always use caution when entering their homes. They almost always recognize immediately that you’re there for good reasons. They love to walk. They love toys, tug and fetch. They can be a little reactive toward small animals or other dogs. It’s best to avoid until you really have a feel of the German you’re walking.

The german shepherd that I walk frequently is an older girl, whose back legs seem to be going. Despite her age and health, she can still be pretty active. She'll watch any creatures we find (raccoons, squirrels) but not get aggressive towards them. She seemed to enjoy just walking around, not too fast, right by my side.

I walked two German Shepherds in one walk. I had never met the dogs before the walk and read a note that they would bark at new people. After I walked into the house, they barked a few times and after being calm and saying hi to them both, they stopped and were fine with me. Both of the dogs pulled the entire time but if I said "stop" the dogs would listen and give me time to adjust and get ready to go again. They were both very good with giving the other time to use the bathroom before they started pulling again. Overall, we had a great walk, it was just hard at times since they were pulling hard and it was a 60 min walk. When I go to the house, I let them out of the crate and they waited for me by the front door ready to go on their walk. We did not encounter any other dogs so I am not sure how they would have acted but they were very friendly with people who were walking by. Neither of the dogs barked and they just wanted to get pet. On the walk, they were very active but once we got home, they were completely calm. In order to get them to go back in their crate, I just said "go to crate" and they both went into their crates. Overall, I believe these dogs were very smart and trained well. They listened to simple commands and were friendly with people.

I walked two German Shepherds at once. Their names were Layla and Rocco. Even though that were more towards the older side they still had a ton of energy and we're super strong dogs. Although they weren't very dog friendly they did listen very well to commands such as Sit Stay and stop pulling. German Shepherds are really smart dogs they have the ability to be guard dogs as well as great family dogs. Training them is very easy compared to other breeds you just have to make sure that they know who the leader is.

German Shepherd walked very well on the leash. I definitely recommend prong collar for this dog as it makes it easier to control and collar will not slip off of neck. Some can be reactive to other dogs but in general I have found they are not aggressive. When I meet I do not pay attention to them nor do I acknowledge their existence until they come to me. They do require a leader or they will take the place very quickly. They require good brisk structured walk. They love to chase balls and love to run. Mine tends to be reactive to other dogs while on leash but off leash is extremely friendly. They need training and learn extremely quickly very very smart dogs. Wonderful breed for the family that wants to put in the time and effort.

This German Sheppard’s loves to sleep and he LOVES his walks. When I walked him I always tried to go a certain path and he would always just stare at me like I didn't know where I was going. I finally let him lead the way one day and to my surprise he had a route he liked to follow. Now every single time I have to walk him I know that he knows which way he wants to walk. Sometimes the owner extends the walks from thirty minutes to an hour walk and I’ll have to lead the way, but he is a very smart and cute dog. I am also a preferred walker so I get to see this dog often and he has grown to know who I am. If the owner is home she will open the door and this dog will walk out to me where my car is parked and wait for me to get situated to begin our walk. He is very old as well, so I am very surprised that he is able to walk for so long and enjoy the walks. I had one day where I walked him five times in one day. I’ve noticed that this specific type of dog is really calm and enjoys their walks. This dog specifically is started to age a lot so the walks themselves are slow and enjoyable, we still manage to do about a mile and a half within the hour walks that I do have with this German Sheppard. There are times when he is more tired than other days, but they are always happy to see me. There was one day that the dog did not want to eat his food at all until the end of the day did I notice that he had eaten. I have to say that my overall view on a German Sheppard is that they are happy and loyal and always so happy to go on walks and they are always happy to just sleep as well. They are loving animals and they are quick to learn who their walker is, and it is always sad to go home after a walk especially when you are driving away and you see the dog you just walked standing by the window watching you drive away. These dogs are special dogs in my opinion, I am very happy to be their walker. Thank you

I walked two German Shepherds--one an older (10-13-yr old) female, and the other a younger (3-yr old) male. The female was mostly blind, but otherwise neither had any obvious health problems. They were both exceptionally sweet dogs. They jumped right up as soon as I greeted them, were clearly very excited to see someone, and were similarly affectionate throughout the walk. Both dogs seemed to be exploding with energy, and almost surely would rather have been running at top speed than walking along with me. Regardless, both walked well other than some very occasional pulling on their leashes. These dogs were clearly very smart, very playful, very strong, and very sweet. Their owner(s) was/were not home at the time, and both seemed very sad to see me leave. Clearly these were dogs who preferred attention and companionship.

I walked the sweetest German Shepherd who was blind in one eye. She was hesitant as I approached and tried to pull me back into the house as we left. Once I got her around the corner though, she was full steam ahead. She did great hiking up a mountain nearby and was so sweet. She even tried to jump into my car as I left!

Get ready for a jog. The two that I have walked are super high energy and want to run for the whole 30 minutes of their "walk". They were extremely friendly dogs, wanting to say hi to everyone and everything. And having a ball or a stick with you is a good idea, especially if they're on a retractable lead. Gotta watch out for geese/ducks though because they will chase them.

Zues is such an awesome boy! For the longest time, I have always though of this breed as very robotic with little personality....but I was totally wrong! Zues always had some dog story to tell me (I understood he likes treats) and he would girl his head if you were trying to tell him something new. Very resourceful, he saw that I had dropped my glass and found them for me . This breed is very smart and very friendly . I just love how protective they are as well. He would never allow strange people to come too close to us at night.

Mjay was a sweet puppy. She loved her walks and pulled a little bit. That is expected with a puppy though. She also loved to play with her toy duck! She was very lovable and a very good guard dog! She was a puppy so super friendly for the most part. She is very excited and curios. She may react negatively it seems by choice if she isn't familiar with someone but not often. Good listening and direction responses are on point. Awesome dog yo have and walk with. Especially if you would be looking for a dog but not too well versed, easy going dog overall.

Meet Ben! Ben is a very, very tall German Shepherd. I'm almost 5'7 and Ben comes up to my hips when on all 4 paws. Ben's dad says they think he is mixed with Great Dane but I think he is just a Direwolf. Ben is such a gentle giant though and wanted nothing but love!

I have walked a few German shepherds, and also adopted one about a year and a half ago. All the German shepherds I’ve walked were super obedient and knew all the basic commands. From my personal experience they’re very easy to train because they love to please their owners and receive praise. For example I taught my gsd how to sit in less than a day. All of the shepherds I’ve walked were not aggressive with me at all. However I can’t speak for the entire breed when I say this, but my dog definitely knows when I’m being threatened or in a dangerous situation and will not hesitate to protect me! They shed like crazy, brushing is recommended unless you want your floors to be covered in fur. I’d even say to brush them multiple times a day! As far as their energy goes, they are SUPER energetic! I recommend long walks twice a day if possible (in the morning and evening.) And for sure take them to dog parks or a big field of grass because they LOVE to run at full speed and to be chased. They are one of the most loyal breeds I’ve come across.

eet Krispy! I'm putting my wager in to guess that Krispy is a Shepherd Chihuahua mix! Krispy looks a lot bigger in his pictures than in real life - I had thought that I walked into the wrong apartment at first! Since he's still young, he would stop, sit, and look at me in a confused way when we came across things that he didn't understand. This is one smart pup and I could swear he understood me. We started playing the name game where I would just say what it was he was confused about and he would literally look at the confused thing again and then give a look like "oh okay, cool!" and continue walking. On our walk, Krispy learned these new words: crying baby, door knocker, uber, markers, girl scouts and mother yelling at girl scouts.

I own a german shepherd and know all of their quirks. I have a female and I love their excitable and dramatic personalities. They will bound around a yard with you, but also will protect your house from any intruders. So, from these things i have learned to generally keep them away from other dogs but are VERY trainable and well behaved.

German Shepherds can be a pretty varied walk. Well-trained GSDs are very easy and, while they may bark before you come in the door, they warm up to you well. Ones without much training and lots of puppy energy, while still being sweet, need more close supervision and may have more triggers, like squirrels or strangers. Overall they are intelligent, affectionate, energetic dogs!

The Shepard’s bark is very intimidating but as soon as he saw me, he was a complete lover, so excited to go outside. He was stoic and calm and conveyed a protector vibe to all people we passed. Very patient and obedient.

This has been my favorite breed to walk. I have had at least 3 different shepherds so 3 different personalities. All have been great at listening. They sit when told to sit. Wait when told to wait. Come when told to come. The 2 that I walk every now and then have been friendly enough. They listen and have not been difficult. One shepherd I walk twice a week started out being very shy. Not wanting to even look you in the eyes. To get him on a leash was a feat in itself. After our 2nd walk he realized that I am trustworthy. That I was not going to hurt him and that I was there to make his life better. The German Shepherd is so smart. Such an ability to learn and trust. My regular GS walk is so amazing now. Chuk trusts me and comes right to me. The GS definitely needs to be walked and socialized. Start them young and be consistent. Great dog.

The german shepherd did pull on his leash but was quick to stop if you made him sit or stood still for a bit. He was trained very well. He wasn't much for sniffing everything but was more focused on walking as much as possible. He lived in a small apartment so I think he appreciated the exercise part of walking the most. He also loved to chase squirrels.

They are amazing dogs but should not be purchased by first time dog owners. This is a working breed so they do need to be kept busy and trained starting from a very young age. Socialization and exposure to triggers from a young age is very important. If you have never raised a dog before on your own do not start with a German Shepard. They are very smart and want to please their owners. Start socializing them with loud noises, other dogs, and strangers from a young age. Never encourage chewing on objects that you do not want them destroying. They want to learn and are quick learners. It is important to have their hips radio-graphed at an early age such as 8 months old. They should be fed with slow feeders, they do like a challenging of hunting down their food. Also I would highly recommend getting their nails cut when they are young and regularly taking them to your local animal hospital for weight checks and nail trims. You want to ensure they have a positive experience with your local animal hospital. They do require constant grooming and brushing. They shed TONS!

This is a beautiful breed.I do enjoy walking this breed, however the specific dog I walked was a little hard to control. She would lay down in the middle of the road when crossing the street and refuse to move. It would take a lot of persuading of this dog to get her up and moving again. She was a little intimidating to pet or tug the leash as her size and look she would give was unsettling. I have been told before they are 1 owner dogs meaning they trust and listen to one person as their owner, however I hadn't experienced this until this walk. The dog was sweet, but had a slight intimidating presence. I would walk this breed again for further experience.

My German Shepherd clients are some of my favorite, because they are so smart. They tend to be very social toward other people and dogs while on their walks. They love to run beside you if you’re a jogger and they really love socializing with other dogs in a dog park. However, sometimes they don’t know their own large size and can be over-whelming or over-friendly to smaller breeds. German Shepherds tend to be easy to train as they are quick to learn sit, stay, heel, and come. German shepherds can shed quite a bit, so they need brushing and grooming on a regular basis. They have a moderate amount of energy so it’s best to take them on long walks, go to a dog park, let them run along with you and play in the snow if the climate allows. They are very affectionate to their owners and dedicated as protective watch-dogs, even though they are not violent unless trained to be that way. If you are walking a German shepherd and have not trained them to sit or heel, they are very strong and can pull, so it’s best to teach them as puppies. They are well behaved and easy to love and they are very loyal to their family, walkers and friends. They respond well to treats and training.

I grew up with a German Shepherd and have only experienced them to be strong, smart, and ready to play. Fiercely loyal and protective, they are focused and may be a bit territorial. However, when raised to be social and friendly, they can be very gentle and loving. If not trained well though, they can be jumpers and they're big and strong. Due to their generally being bred to be smarter, training a German Shepherd is effective and lasting.

German Shepherds are highly intelligent and obedient dogs. Steadily calm in disposition, these guys if trained properly will never leave your side. They are very loyal to their owners and those who show them respect and affection. They have fairly moderate energy levels but it always varies from dog to dog. They show little aggression towards other dogs unless they sense a form of threat or danger. They will protect themselves and their humans if necessary.

I walked a German Shepard named Apollo. Apollo was a great dog, and didn't run towards any cars. Apollo did have a loud bark, which might scare some people. You should be cautious when you are around other people when walking this breed. Also, this breed poo and pee's a lot so you should always bring a lot of poo bags with you. I found out that this breed is better to run than walk as well. They are bigger dogs that need exercise. Also, when you first meet this breed it is better to let them smell you and get to know you better since they can be defensive to their owners. Overall, Apollo was a great dog and loved to run in the leaves. They also like to jump on furniture so don't rally them too much when you first get into their house. Also, make sure that you have a good grip on the lease when you walk them. They love squirrels and little animals as well. I would love to walk Apollo again in the future.

I've walked German Shepherds in the past, but Tino was such a sweetheart to me. He greeted me right away with a boop from his nose to my face and jumped on me for hugs. He was very excited to go on his walk; so excited that he couldn't stop moving for me to put his harness on. He nearly bolted when I tried to hook the leash on. Needless to say, German Shepherds are a very enthustiastic and energetic breed and they require a lot of physical excercise and control from the walker. He was a very good dog who was easily excited in leaves or sticks that laid on the ground for his mouth to get a hold of. So they're also very curiousl, but know when to spit things out when told no. However, they are very agressive in terms of how they treat other dogs and some people. For instance, not only did Tino have issues with other dogs, but I've had issues with German Shepherds getting along with other dogs that they pass, so the owners will warn me to avoid other dogs. Sometimes, they'll like bigger dogs like them, but hate small dogs or they'll act overly playful with other dogs and it might be taken for aggression. Moreover, Tino was really protective and defensive over me. I am a female walker and I noticed that he got more defensive when men passed me and would lunge for them. Then, when I passed women, he wouldn't even bother. In short, German Shepherds can be very protective of their owner of walker when you are with them. So make that you establish that you are the alpha. Furthermore, tying back to enthusiam and excitement in the breed, Tino and other fellow shepherds tend to pull on the leash with their mouth to lead you or take charge of the walk. Don't let this happen. If the dog knows commands, use them to your advantage and they'll stop right away and be the most obedient dog to walk. However, if they don't listen to you, keep a short leash to pull them away from situations that trigger them. They thrive on commands and they know what not to do, so I'm not afraid to establish myself as the boss. They're a breed that loves having someone to look up to!

I've walked a few different German Shepherds for Wag and they have all been extremely well behaved. Two in particular were young and had a lot of energy, but as soon as I hooked the leash they were walking like experts! They seem to be very easily and well trained, quickly redirected, and listen to commands. One of the dog breeds that did not pull forward or "lead" me. The shepherds seem to be the most obedient and willing to please whomever is in charge.

German Shepherds are a loyal, high energy breed usually in medium to large sizes. They can be aloof but not aggressive if socialized properly. Greet them slowly and give them plenty of time to warm up to you when approaching them. It helps to channel a calm energy and speak to them in a low authoritative tone. They only bark when necessary. As German Shepherds were originally bred as a working dog, they can have tons of energy and thus the breed needs to be exercise a few times a day, for thirty minutes up to an hour each time. Sometimes they would love to go for a jog and other times they would much rather just go exploring around the neighborhood. On the walk, they are confident and curious, wanting to sniff and track scents on the sidewalks and trees. They are eager to please and are usually good with other dogs and children, but should be supervised. They are highly intelligent and enjoy challenging walks, obstacles and routes. And they are usually happy to walk by your side and should not be pulling too much, though for those that aren’t taught to leash manners, you’ll find yourself being pulled along by a strong dog. German Shepherds remain very alert on the walk and will indicate any stranger presences or dog approaching when they kept still, with their ears pointing to the source of sound. I find that to be very useful in avoiding dog encounters when you’re not sure of the dog’s temperament and can walk to the other side quickly before the other dog approaches. Also, German Shepherds are generally friendly with other dogs and will not instigate any incidents, so there’s no major concern there. German Shepherds do not get fixated on any dogs or humans or objects and will quickly come with you when asked to with a authoritative voice. They aim to please and it very much work in your favor when walking this breed. German Shepherds love being with humans so reward them with lots of neck rubs and kisses at the end of the walk. Do make sure they are hydrated with lots of water (especially in the summer time) and that they had a good amount of exercise within the designated walk time, even if that means adding in a jog around the neighborhood block or bringing a ball along for the walk.

The German Shepherd breed is perfect for families, and have even been called America’s number one dog. They are wonderful, and so compassionate, but they do require a great deal of care. German Shepherds are considered “working breeds” and in need of large amounts of physical exercise. German Shepherds are large, energetic animals, and like all dogs, they need to be taught good canine manners. Any German Shepherd I have worked with has been wonderful, always friendly, but definitely energetic. Due to their high volume nature, these dogs also love to eat. Their metabolisms are slower than they seem though, so it is best to make sure to accurately measure out regular meals, especially if they live in an apartment setting where they may not have a lot of room for physical exercise indoors. Another common personality trait I’ve seen among German Shepherd’s is that if they are not given enough attention, or exercise, they can be destructive or develop separation anxiety; some German Shepherds will dig up holes in the backyard, others will chew on furniture. Exercise is a necessity for this breed. I have seen homes with a single German Shepherd and homes with numerous pets, including a German Shepherd among cats and other small dog breeds. These dogs can adapt to live with a variety of animals, or can be by themselves. However, as mentioned, they do need attention so having another furry friend around for them to play with might not be a bad idea! If you adopt an older dog, be sure to make sure they are animal friendly. Some German Shepherds have temperaments against other animals if brought up in certain situations. German Shepherds are also good prospects for therapy dogs. When they are trained correctly and have a healthy, balanced exercise regiment they can be some of the nicest, humblest therapy dogs. I have worked with German Shepherds during therapy dog training, as well as boarding through Wag!, and the response people give to these dogs is amazing. There is something about German Shepherd’s that people feel very comfortable with, as if they are just naturally good hearted. To anyone looking for adopting a German Shepherd make sure to adopt from either the Humane Society, another adoption agency, or a reputable breeder. Because of the high demand in American society for German Shepherd puppies, there are plenty of people breeding German Shepherds who are more interested in filling the demand for German Shepherd puppies than in breeding healthy dogs with good temperaments. To get a healthy dog, never buy a puppy from an irresponsible breeder, puppy mill, or pet store.

The German Shepherd I have walked had been recently rescued and was still getting used to peopl. She was very reluctant to walk and did not want to leave her home. But, her mom wanted me to get her as far as I coul. So once her mom walked back inside, she calmed down a bit. We walked through she’d neighborhood and we did stop a few times to get her to warm up to me. We sat together and by the end of the walk she was letting me pet her a lot and I received kisses from her. She was happy to get back home, but for being very nervous she did really well on our walk. I would not mind walking a German Shepherd again

I had a great experience with a German Shepherd. She is a good guard dog as she was cautious when I came near her owner. The owner gave her a few commands and she listened well. While on the walk, she listened to my commands and felt very loyal to her owners. She had alot of energy even though I walked her for over an hour.

I walked a German Shepard mix who was still a puppy. Arya was not only a year old, she was such a cutie. The owner mentioned to me she was a rescue puppy and might be a bit afraid of strangers. When I walked in Arya was barking at me and ducked off in the corner. I felt so bad for her but i was determined to walk her. I asked her if she wanted to go outside and gave her a treat so I can be on her good side. She eventually warmed up to me and let me take her on a walk. Once she was outside she was full of energy and sniffed everything. During our walk she kept looking book at me as if to make sure I was still there. Arya was so sweet and I had a great time walking her.

He would get destructive if left alone; for instance, he got into the trash almost every time he was left alone, and one time he ate through my car seat when he was left in the car. He was extremely intelligent, could open and unlock car doors, and was a diabetic service dog. He shed a LOT and needed frequent grooming.

I have walked three different German Shepherds since I've been working with Wag! Two of the walks were great because the owners were home and they introduce me to the dog. The third one was difficult, because the owner wasn't home and the dog was being protective with the house so he was aggressive. That's something you have to be aware of when you are going to work with these kind breeds. They are guardians of their homes and they might think that you are a threat.

I have walked three different German Shepherds and they were all very smart. Two of them were very well trained and listened well to you even if you were newer. Very fit and powerful dogs that can be protective of their owner, walker or each other. The dog was on guard at first. She did not want me to enter the house since no one was home. I had to convince her to walk and let her feel extremely friendly with me at first. This dog was really cautious as to who enters the house and they could sniff our fear. It takes a lot of courage to walk this type of dogs. Eventually she realized that I am her to walk her and she was okay but still never ler her guard down.

German Shepherds are very intelligent dogs. With the right training, they can do any number of tricks. There’s a reason they are the most common police dog. I’ve walked two German Shepherd sisters. They are super smart. They’re very friendly. They show a lot of love. They know what they want. When they’re hungry or thirsty, they will let you know. They’re also very strong dogs. They can be very big pullers. Their hair is long and needs continuous upkeep. They are definitely shedders. They are very loyal dogs and the true definition of man’s best friend. From their looks to their temperament, they are great dogs to own and walk. When it comes to dog photos, they do very well at sitting and posing too!

I just love German Shepherds! They are pretty awesome dogs. I have worked with quite a few in the past and I always fall instantly in love with them. Most of the ones I have met are very friendly and never take long to warm up to me. I have met a few, that couldn’t care less about me and were pretty independent and would have rather had the time to themselves or with their owner. That being said, they seem like very loyal dogs to their owner, making them great family guard dogs. Pretty much all of the German Shepherd have been very high energy and love playing fetch or going for a run. They are so smart and always focused on what their activity is at the moment. I love German Shepherds and always enjoy working with them.

This shepherd was still a giant puppy, so he was very excited to play and go for a long walk. He ran with me for 3 miles before needing to slow down. He loves crunching through the leaves, picking up sticks,and meeting new people on our walk. He jumps a little bit, but very obedient when you say no. I have walked puppy German Shepards and Veteran Shepards. They are lively and energetic dogs. they are super friendly and curious. Cautious too. A German Shepard says a full on hello and will run towards you. Make sure you mean no harm because these are some very protective dogs. They do not do well with other dogs. They are aggressive at hellos and will check you out before going with you. They are big dogs with a lot of energy and will need a nice sprint to get tires or a walk up hill will do too. They do not care much for affection they like to be rewarded and left alone. They do obey to commands once they are trained. They have not been the most playful in my experience. Even as puppies they kind of just want to explore on their own.

My German Shepherd is extremely energetic and excitable. She loves people, but if not corralled she tends to jump on them, but not bark. If too excited while playing, she tends to nip at your hands. She's smart, but also headstrong and so can have trouble listening to commands. She is food aggressive enough though that treats are a good way to win her over. Mine has a short enough coat that she doesn't need to be groomed often, but does develop dander.

The German Shepard I took for a walk was such a regale animal. The German Shepard’s build was very strong, dominant, and beautiful. She was a very friendly girl, but was frightened by other dogs because she was a rescue pup. Although she was afraid of other dogs, this German Shepard was extremely friendly towards humans and loved to be loved. While on our walk, the German Shepard was very well trained and did not pull hardly at all on her leash. The German Shepard was very calm and enjoyed her walk. I believe that a thirty-minute walk is not sufficient for a German Shepard, I think sixty minutes would be ideal. The German Shepard breed is a loyal and protective breed that is easily trained.

A german shepherd duo, Chauncer and Bach, was one of the first set of dogs that I ever walked. They were very friendly with one another, but didn't have too much interest in getting very friendly with me. It was clear, however, that they were protective of me. They would stare down anyone who was walking toward us. It gave me the impression that, if provoked, they had the potential to be aggressive. Because of this notion, I made sure to keep the leashes quite short and would avoid getting too close to anyone. They never did end of getting into any trouble though; overall they are very good dogs that tend to be more interested in canine companionship than the companionship of a walker (though they're mighty happy to be getting some exercise). Chauncer and Bach were more than happy to rough house with one another when given the opportunity.

I always been afraid of this breed growing up but When I started working with them I have came to find out they are the sweetest dogs ever. They love to play and explore. Never really had an issue with him being aggressive or anything only when he hears stomping noises outside the door but that's just to stand his ground in his home. The only other time was when he seen another dog act out towards him. They are easy to train at a young age. Extremely well behaved and so fun to run around with. The shed a lot but as long as you comb their coat at least once a week you should be ok. They grow pretty big but three cups of food a day would be perfectly fine. Oh and lots of water!

Riley welcomed me at the door with a wagging tail. She knew I was there to walk her, so she readily put on her harness. She was very well-behaved throughout my experience with her, reflecting her high ability to be trained. During the walk, she was very aware of myself and her surroundings. Her neighborhood had a lot of stimulation, with multiple townhomes, people and other dogs. At times, she had her nose to the ground, sniffing her way through our route, but she never lagged behind or tried to pull ahead. She listened very well, even though we had just met. When we got back to her house, her ears perked up when I got a treat. She was able to sit and shake. Overall, she was very sweet and intelligent.

Also when I would start brushing him he acted so weird but I could tell he really enjoyed it! He was so sweet and beautiful and every time I called his name he would run to me with his ears down looking as sweet as ever! He loved interacting with certain humans seemed a little picky on who he would play with! I think German Shepards are little weirdos! Watching them interact with other dogs can be funny! I find them to be very skeptical of other dogs and their surroundings! I haven't really experienced them playing with other dogs. They usually just watch and maybe follow them around haha. Also they bark at them depending on what the other dogs are doing haha. One time the German Shepard that I fell in live with was playing with this Great Dane puppy ad it was just so weird that out of everyone he chose her as a playmate and he was playing so weirdly haha! I think it's very important for them to socialize at a young age with other people and dogs since they seem a little on edge sometimes.

When walking a German Shepherd, I've found that right after doing their business, they really want to run to get out some energy. This is an energetic breed that takes some time and maturity to become well-trained. The three dogs I've walked were all young and would all bite the leash and pull on it when we were heading a way she didn't want to go! This is game was fun for the dog, but when it became frustrating for me, the dogs all responded well to a commanding "No." After a few minutes of running, usually we could walk back home with a happy dog!

The German Shepherd I walked were very energetic and curious. He loved to play with sticks and carry them in his mouth. He was very friendly and very attentive. He was very willing to get trained and follow commands. He was very friendly and he wanted to go and sniff new people. He was cool to walk and every once in a while he would pull when he wanted to explore something new. Like I said he was very curious. Great dog to walk

She's super friendly and loving with both animals and people. She is a bit of a klutz assuming she will grow out of that. Only sign of protectiveness is when a person is wearing a hood or walking/running up quickly behind us. A little concerned with her energy levels she tuckers out quickly after a 1 mile run or a 4 mile trail walk with no elevation. She also has severe skin allergies. I love German Shepherds and I am completely happy with her but I probably won't select a purebred again for health reason related to breeding.

I adopted 2 senior German Shepherd retired show dogs. Ravon is 10 and Lexi is 9. Ravon was a grand champion and they used him as a stud after that. His back end goes down much further than Lexi's and seems much weaker. He can't walk as far or as stable as Lexi. The breeders said he has a good gait and gave me all of the paperwork on his health (hips included). Because he was a show dog he had to have no problems. Not having a lot of experience with this breed, I'm wondering if I should be worried about his back end? I do give him pills for arthritis and that seems to help but he still can't walk but about a block before having to sit down. Any ideas or suggestions?

Our German Shepard is lovely, very affectionate, loves children and anyone who is willing to give her attention ! She loves our daily walks, bike rides, runs or anything that she can retrieve for you. She is very lucky to have a full yard to roam, and does a daily tours of the yard to make sure there are no predictors, as she also can be a hunter.

He's very loving and cuddly. But also likes to bark at everything from squirrels to cars. He's stubborn so training takes a lot of consistency and patience. But once he learns a command he loves to please. Silly and crazy protective. Good with kids and dogs! Hates cats though.

Sadie is a great dog but has seasonal allergies so we battle ear infections, hot spots, itching/biting herself. Lots of money spent at the vet! But she’s great on our outdoor adventures and does well with our 1 year old. Wouldn’t trade her for the world!

Karma and Kismet are littermate sisters. They are tightly bonded with each other which makes training a little more of a challenge because they distract each other and they do not like to be separated from the other. If you are considering getting littermates, I would highly recommend that you immediately get them used to being separated throughout each day. I train my girls with hand signals or gestures that accompany the verbal commands. Every verbal also has a gesture. In my opinion, this is extremely important. Noisy situation? They will still see your gesture! This could be a life saver! Not to mention if they get hearing loss as they age. I am currently making them their own agility course in our yard. They love new challenges. Even though they are littermates, their distinct personalities are starting to shine through at 14 months. I highly recommend German Shepherds to anyone as long as you are willing to have them by your side. These are not the dogs to have if you are away from home for more than 8 hours a day. And ideally, they don’t want you away from them at all. My girls are my best friends. And they know it!

A wonderful pupperino! I couldn't be happier. He listens so well for his age, especially without any distractions. Learned very quickly not to use teeth at all when playing with humans just with a "ow!" when he first did it. <3

We have what you would call a Covid puppy. She was not socialized enough and is now very disagreeable with anyone who is not our immediate family. She does ok when taking her on vacation to my cousins house, but at our house, she does not warm up to anyone at all. It’s a real bummer. At the dog park she’s fine with everyone there, but refuses to play with other dogs. She wants nothing to do with them. She’s still pretty young, so we are hoping we can help transform this behavior into a more tolerable one. We love her just the same! Oh, and when she was just about 8 weeks old, we trained her to ring a bell hanging on door handle, every time she needed to potty. It took a week for her to completely get it down. She’s smarter than smart!!! And we love her!

Bullet is an excellent boy! He is incredibly obedient (to my mom) and pretty good with me too. He is full of energy and will not once hesitate to go on a walk. He is gentle with my brother (6) and he will never bite any of us. He gets along well with a lot of dogs, but he also enjoys barking at others. Overall, Bullet is a good boy.

Bruno is a big baby over 100 lbs very territorial and protective of family but extremely aggressive towards anybody passing by or strangers coming to the house, must be tied up. Have not been able to walk him or take him to the vet because we are scared he will hurt someone.

He occasionally lets me rub behind his ears, it's his favorite spot. He is so cute and has all kinds of moles on his tongue. One thing I have noticed is that he gets really anxious when there is loud noise or when me or my family members haven't played outside with him.
