Welsh Springer, Welshie

These beautiful and affectionate dogs have been a favorite in the hunting industry for generations. The Welsh Springer Spaniel is intelligent, loyal, and willing to please his owner at all cost. In fact, this dog will stick to your side so much you might as well name him after a piece of Velcro! Besides his friendly personality, some of the most noticeable traits of this breed are the versatile coat that is waterproof, weatherproof, and even thorn resistant. On top of this, the Welshie, as he is affectionately called, has slightly webbed feet that enable him to swim expertly in order to retrieve any fowl that may fall into the water while hunting. If you are looking for a companion dog that is great with kids, a loyal friend, and an excellent hunter then look no further. The Welshie may be a difficult pup to train due to a rather difficult stubborn streak, but if you can remain patient and firm, your dog can be molded into a very well-mannered pet. Just like in ancient times, these dogs are still popular for hunting, as well as being showed and warming up any home with their energetic personality.

Welsh Springer Spaniel Breed History

Interestingly, the Welsh Springer Spaniel took the spring into its name because of how it “springs” upon prey once it is down for the count. These extremely intelligent dogs were always a favorite hunter and have actually been around for centuries. While it may be easy to group them into the same category as their cousins, the English Springer Spaniel, it is actually a distinct breed all of its own. The Welshie is easily distinguished by its flowing red and white spotted coat and slightly more laid back personality. Due to how friendly and overall accepting they are of strangers, it is no surprise that this hunting dog would become a favorite of royalty back in the olden days. At first, they were only popular in Wales, but in the late 19th century more of the dogs appeared in shows and their popularity grew. It took quite some time for the American Kennel Club to recognize the breed, and by the time it did in the year 1906, there weren’t many people interested in the red and white Spaniel. However, when a few of the dogs were imported over to America in 1949, breeding took off and the Welsh Springer Spaniel Club of America was founded just a few years later. Now that these dogs are well known pretty much everywhere, they are still used for things such as shows, tracking, hunting, retrieving, being a watchdog, and a companion. There is no doubt that this jolly breed has a lot to offer!

Welsh Springer Spaniel Breed Appearance

There is no doubt that the Welsh Springer Spaniel is a handsome dog. With an athletic and compact build, this medium-sized breed is definitely made for sport. Their tails are typically docked and carried horizontally, while their feet are webbed just enough to make swimming easier. Probably the most striking feature of this breed is their red and white fur, which can grow out as either wavy, flat, or straight! When groomed the coat glistens and paired with the oval shaped eyes (which can be colored from dark to a medium brown) that sparkle with joviality, the Welshie is definitely a unique dog to behold. Completing their look is slight feathering that trails down the body, ears, and legs; it is important to keep this feathering brushed out after outdoor activity in order to prevent tangles.

Welsh Springer Spaniel Breed Maintenance

When the Welshie’s coat is groomed properly it is shiny and stunning. This breed sheds seasonally and needs to be brushed every time he comes back from hunting (to prevent matting) and at least twice a week. The best tools for the job are typically a stainless steel comb and a slicker brush. Pay close attention to the feathering found along the legs, body, and ears with the slicker brush. You can then use the comb on the rest of the body to remove any dirt and loose hair lying around. Besides brushing, it is important to perform frequent cleanings for your dog’s ears as folded ears tent to hold in more moisture, which welcomes infection. This is especially true if your Welshie loves to swim; be sure to dry the ears well when he is finished! Nails should be trimmed every couple of weeks and feet kept healthy. This is important for a hunting dog as they really rely on their feet to help them perform their job well.

Welsh Springer Spaniel Temperament

When they say that this dog is like a piece of Velcro, they aren’t kidding! There is nothing that a Welsh Springer Spaniel loves more than being with his family. He is a very loyal and happy dog that loves to be included in all kinds of activities. While he is very energetic, the Welshie is actually more laid back than his English Springer ancestors; this makes him the perfect dog to be a working dog and still calm enough to be around younger children. It is important to remember that as a high-energy working dog, the Welshie will need a strong leader to help guide him; otherwise he may not listen to commands and become a problem. Early socialization, along with plenty of activity, is important for keeping the Welshie at his best behavior. This breed needs to be trained early to hunt in order to fully understand your commands and intentions when out hunting; working with the dog’s natural ability as opposed to working against it will help in creating the perfect hunting companion and family pet.
